Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

UK 2010 | 115 mins | 15
It’s been a busy few years for film biographies of famed musicians, with everyone from Johnny Cash to Ian Curtis having their life stories told on screen. Now it’s the turn of Ian Dury, the enigmatic, polio-stricken lead singer of The Blockheads, one of the most enduring acts to emerge from the British punk rock movement of the 1970s. The first solo directorial feature by director Mat Whitecross, who co-helmed The Road to Guantanamo with Michael Winterbottom, takes its title from one of Duury’s most popular tunes and tells his story from a difficult childhood through to his success as the most unlikely of pop stars. An energetic and vibrant tribute to a true musical original, built around a thrillingly passionate central performance by Andy Serkis.

Mat Whitecross

Director Mat Whitecross began his film career as a runner and production assistant, working his way up to editor with Michael Winterbottom on the 2004 9 Songs and a co-director credit with Winterbottom on the 2006 The Road to Guantanamo. TV work on series such as Nearly Famous and Spooks followed, before a further teaming with Winterbottom on 2009's The Shock Doctrine and a solo directing credit on the documentary Moving to Mars (also 2009). Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is his first solo directing credit on a dramatic feature.

Andy Serkis

London-born actor Andy Serkis began his career on the stage, making his television debut in the late 1980s with supporting roles in series such as The New Statesman, The Darling Buds of May and The Bill. His big break came 2001 when he landed the role of Gollum in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King, which brought him widespread attention and a number of prestigious awards. He has continued his TV work with roles in series as diverse as The Simpsons and Little Dorrit, and had a scene stealing turn as murderer Ian Brady in the 2006 Longford.
